Ralph Smith, LCSW
Ralph has strong assessment skills that help him navigate situations in which clients may feel confused or overwhelmed. While meeting with adults and teens to assess their situation, he uses his calm and caring personality to put individuals at ease. Once he has collaboratively worked with an individual to assess concerns, Ralph uses a variety of therapy techniques including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy , Dialectical Behavioral Therapy, Strength-Focused Therapy, and Client-Centered Therapy to address the goals, barriers, and symptoms that have been identified. Ralph is empathetic and non-judgmental while remaining genuine and focused on therapy goals.
After graduating for Washington University in St. Louis Ralph began his career providing counseling to adolescents in residential treatment programs. In the seven years he spent working with teens, he saw teenagers struggling with severe mental health concerns, significant situational barriers, and the typical concerns that come with adolescence. Beyond providing therapy, Ralph was responsible for offering group therapy, locating resources for clients, conducting family sessions, and intervening in emergencies that families were experiencing. From his position in residential facilities, Ralph moved to working in victim services. When working in victim services, Ralph began providing outpatient counseling to clients who had experienced violence, trauma, control, or abuse. While facing these issues with clients, Ralph helped individuals grapple with the issues that came along with their abusive environments--anxiety, depression, codependency, loss, anger, panic, and confidence.
Ralph is particularly skilled at working with reluctant and resistant clients who present with complex problems. With a genuine desire to connect with each and every one of his clients Ralph can easily connect, even with the resistant teen. With over 20 years in the field Ralph brings an intangible amount of experience into the therapy room with him.
